The Harlingen Country Club is located in the small municipal
oasis of Palm Valley, a suburb to the city of Harlingen. The population
of Palm Valley is approximately 1500, and many of the residents of
this Texas golf community are club members. Nearly one-half of the
total acreage of Palm Valley consists of the golf course itself. The
primary street is configured as an oval that encloses the golf course
and abutting private homes. Biking, jogging and walking are popular
forms of outdoor exercise by the local citizenry and the weather is
almost always accommodating. One lap around the oval is approximately
3.5 miles and the street is conveniently marked in quarter mile intervals.
The
City of Palm Valley and the Harlingen Country Club have a close
working relationship. The Club allows personal golf cart ownership
and the City permits cart travel to the clubhouse over municipal
streets. The City maintains its own police and street departments.
By virtue of the limited area to cover, police surveillance of the
residential areas is frequent and thorough. Residents of Palm Valley
enjoy a level of safety and security usually associated only with
gated golf communities.
The
Harlingen Country Club was founded on August 18, 1949 and originally
was located on the site of the present day Tony Butler public golf
course in Harlingen. The 3000 square foot, one-story wooden clubhouse
opened in May of 1951 with about 150 members. A fire razed the original
clubhouse in 1968 and the Harlingen Country Club moved to its current
location. A grand opening ceremony was held July 18-20, 1969. The
current clubhouse offers 3 banquet halls, formal and informal dining
rooms, golf and tennis pro shops and locker rooms with attendants.
A recently completed state-of-the-art fitness center features Cybex
equipment.
Harlingen
Country Club hosts the annual South Texas Junior Golf Classic, which
attracts top male and female junior players from throughout the
state of Texas. HCC also is home to the "Life Begins at Forty" tournament,
a match play event for players 40 years of age or older. The event
has been held each spring since 1952 and includes 5 days of golf
with dinner parties in the evenings. This tournament is so popular
that there is waiting list to enter. A blind drawing is held each
year to select the fortunate new entrants and those not drawn go
back in the bowl for another year.
Club
membership is approximately 540, currently consisting of 320 full
privilege, equity members, and 220 limited or social/dining. Some
of our members belong to the "Winter Texan" group, escaping the
cold of the northern states during the winter but returning north
after the spring thaw. Many more are northern transplants who have
become permanent residents of Texas and partially fund the good
life with money saved by the absence of a state income tax.
If
you are yearning for a southern climate and would like to evaluate
one of the best values in Texas country clubs, give our Manager,
Tom Bloemendaal, a call.
